Public warned against illegal SMS transmitters, boosters, jammers
10 Jun 2024 at 08:44pm
MANILA – Globe Telecom Inc. (Globe) today supported the National Telecommunications Commission’s (NTC) ban on the online sale of SMS transmitters and warned the public against the use of devices including illegal signal boosters and jammers. These devices are designed for use during times of extreme disasters but can cause widespread network interference and affect the normal use of public communications.
Hazards of the devices
The use of illegal devices can lead to slow or failed network connections, dropped calls, poor voice quality, and even complete loss of mobile phone signals, Globe said in an advisory. Signal boosters boost network coverage and signals by “occupying” the bandwidth of a cell tower, and while seemingly beneficial, they actually interfere with radio waves, affecting the mobile signals of other users in the vicinity of the booster.
Types of illegal devices and their impact
Illegal signal boosters often come in the form of indoor or outdoor antennas or wireless adapters. These devices “occupy” the bandwidth of a cell tower by boosting the signal in a particular area, thereby interfering with the normal service provided by the cell tower to other users. This interference not only affects the quality of a user’s calls, but can also cause network interruptions and signal loss. cell phone jammer
Signal jammers, on the other hand, completely block cell phone signals, preventing the use of mobile services. These devices are often used in concert halls, theaters, places of worship, and in high-security areas such as prisons, where interference must be avoided. However, signal jammers can also cause serious interference to emergency rescue and disaster relief operations, and even affect automated election systems that rely on cell phone signals.
