If you're not aware, in Diablo 2 you would hire followers to descend upon the gates of hell alongside you, but once they died, you had to D2R Items rehire them with cold hard cash. New followers were introduced in each zone, meaning some were absolutely better than others.

The idea was further developed in Diablo 3, where instead of employing mercenaries you gained three different characters in the story campaign. There was the Scoundrel Sorceress and Templar who represented the different categories of DPS tanks, ranged DPS and magic gamer respectively. In my Diablo 2 Resurrected adventure I only encounter helpful NPCs, who hung around for a few days before heading off into the sunset. When I inquired of Jackson what their thoughts were on how the game's Follower function would work in the game, they said "for the first version of the game, we do have certain places within the story in which you'll see certain known NPCs following you and helping you to figure out what Lilith is doing on the planet.

"We don't have anything we can announce about the Diablo 2-type follower that you hire - we're sticking to the campaign for now." It's all about the for now.

With a smile, they continue "stay tuned, we may be able to announce something in the near future to share, but there are no promises." The announcement immediately provoked a response from dungeon producer Ash Sweetring, who channelled her the Mister. Burns with an 'interesting hand gesture on the screen. What's that? That's sus.If any iteration of the follower system makes them into Diablo 2 Resurrected, I'd prefer a Diablo-2-style hired guns instead of all-encompassing companions. I liked the vast array of different abilities followers provided with Diablo 2 and would love to see this reimagined. It opens up yet more space for different styles, and amazing demon-slaying ability chains.

But for the time being you'll need to get familiar with the classes in Diablo 2 Resurrected, as they're what we'll playing as primarily. In an interview with gaming director Joe Shely, however, it was suggested that the roster may expand as well. After all, the game isn't forever in Sanctuary.

The lead developers of Diablo 2 Resurrected have stressed that they don't want players to "feel as though they're paying to win" as the game comes out next year.

In the recent Diablo 2 Resurrected livestream(opens in new tab) Game director Joe Shely, along with vice-game director Joesph Pipiora and community manager Adam Fletcher gave fans an update on all things Diablo 2 Resurrected, as well as gave an insight into the way things are going to work before the D2R Items buy game's launch next summer.
