Not every stainless steel pipe is the same. The difference between a reliable pipeline and a recurring problem is often hidden in three details.
1. Grade Selection
Grade Best For Avoid For
304/L Clean water, air, food processing Marine, chlorides, coastal areas
316/L Chemical, marine, pharmaceutical, chlorides High-temperature creep service
321 High-temperature (600–900°C) Low-temperature impact
Duplex Seawater, sour gas, high mechanical stress Thin-wall general service
Wrong grade = premature failure.
2. Manufacturing Method
Seamless – No weld seam. Preferred for high pressure, high temperature, and critical services.
Welded – Lower cost. Suitable for non-critical, low-pressure lines.
The application dictates the choice. Using welded pipe where seamless is required is a common specification error.
3. Surface Condition
Pickled and annealed (PA) removes oxide scale and restores corrosion resistance.
Unpickled or poorly pickled pipe looks dark, may have residual scale, and will corrode faster — especially under gaskets, in crevices, or in chloride service.
4. Traceability
Every qualified stainless steel pipe must have:
Heat number stamped on each piece
MTC (Mill Test Certificate) linking to that heat number
EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certification
Without traceability, you cannot prove the material meets specification.
